What each number means
Every measure has one definition, one denominator and one source. Only valid combinations appear in the app — an industry has no salary figure, so we never show one.

Core competencies
The Australian Skills Classification describes work in three layers. We track the two that move with the market — specialist tasks (what you do) and technology tools (what you use). The third layer is ten core competencies that every job uses.
- Specialist tasks — work activities such as analysing data or managing projects. Tracked.
- Technology tools — named software and platforms such as Excel or AWS. Tracked.
- Core competencies — the ten abilities below. Not tracked; role pages show them as levels.
Every job uses these, so we don’t track demand for them.
- Digital engagement
- Using digital devices, software and online systems to get work done safely.
- Initiative and innovation
- Spotting what needs doing and finding new or better ways to do it.
- Learning
- Picking up new knowledge and skills and applying them at work.
- Numeracy
- Working with numbers, measurements and data to make decisions.
- Oral communication
- Speaking and listening so that information and ideas are understood.
- Planning and organising
- Setting priorities, managing time and organising tasks and resources.
- Problem solving
- Working out what is wrong and choosing a way to fix it.
- Reading
- Understanding written information such as instructions, reports and policies.
- Teamwork
- Working with others towards a shared goal.
- Writing
- Producing written text that is clear for its audience and purpose.
